Time To Reflect
Whew! I can finally wipe the sweat that's been dripping from my forehead this whole quarter. I feel like I have been running a marathon, praying that I can reach the finish line.I am here now. Through all the late nights, after a long day's work at the Fred Meyer Pharmacy. Listening to raging customers complain about how long their presciptions are taking to be filled. In the back of my mind, I screaming, " Well I could be doing other things like English homework!" As I sit at my computer my two babies pull at my leg, trying to snatch my attention away from the screen. This is where my single mom multi-tasking skill comes into play, pulling my hair while holding my eyelids open just to stay focused! It's a hard tasks to equally divide one life into three different lives ( home, work and school).Along the race I strained a couple muscles from not strecthing the ideas of critical thinking in my major writing assignments. But I continued on by enduring the strength of analysis to slowly pick up my speed to get through section by section. Although it was a struggle having assignments back to back using skills that I have never really inquired; the thought of living a better life from gaining knowledge through education put me back on my feet! Now I can say I have had run of a lifetime!
The main theme in this quarter was to explore the ideas of living in our diverse society. It was split into three different sections Identity, Community, and Tradition. Each category had its own way of bringing out thoughts and ideas that I never really came up in my life, maybe just unnoticed. For example throughout the Identity section it really pulled my thinking out of the box regarding assumptions made on one' s identity based upon their outward presentation. One of the first essays that I read called "Dude looks like a Lady," written by Kathy Wilson conveyed a message that physical presentation was a leading factor in the way one can define your identity looking in from the outside. One of Wilson's strongest points that help prove this message was "My point is , people get so twisted over female presentation that my bald head is a cause for pause."(22) This is one of my favorite quotes because the message is very strong to me. I guess from personal experiences I can relate to the author more than I expected. I am really shy when it comes to sharing my thoughts and writings assignments. One thing that I came to enjoy doing were group assignments and discussions. The Tradition and Community Units was my breaking point when I decided to explore more with sharing my opinions and conclusions on the essays and movies we were required to depict. I had a lot of fun. I don't think that I had many arguments only positive conversations that opened my eyes. I can now see how many different communities lie right in front of me! ( from text-messaging to shopping on eBay) It's amazing that communities can provide us with a sense of stability, accept who we are, and give us what we need.Tradition made me realize how many of them that my family still follows after decades.(Sunday dinners, Forth of July BBQ)
I defiantly got way more out of the class than I thought. My thought was that all English classes had to do with was trying to figure out what Shakespeare had to say!
The pieces that I chose to display reflect what I have learned this quarter. My strongest pieces that I favor are my two blog assignments that are posted. It seems I can write better under pressure if it's something I can relate to or just plain out like!
From this class I discovered all my strengths and weaknesses. Now they are showcased for you all to see.

Reality of Love (REVISION)
As I sat across from a couple that kissed, laughed, and ejoyed each other's presence. I felt a sense of passion in the air. I felt a sense of love that was real. I caught myself wondering how they may have first met. Did they meet one another through friends or did their eye's connect while walking through the mall ? It used to be that we didn't have to search for love; it came naturally amoung us. The strength of love merged our hearts together, creating one without us even knowing. As time passes the Pop Culture trend of reality television has evolved love into a game. A game that consists of competing for one's heart, searching for love that is not real. This is slowing fading away the idea tradition laid out for us; letting the nature of love find us in reality and not allowing reality to search for one's true love.
The television show that caught my attention the most is called " Flavor of Love". This show is the first of many sequels whose main objective is for one who is famous and/or wealthy hunt for love. They gather a group of men or women whom they choose through a shallow interviewing process conducted by producers." Human-matchmaking is involved only in selecting the game contestants-usually for amusement value as opposed to any concern for happiness or compatibility," says A MSN Entertainment reporter Katie Johnson. This supports the point that Pop Culture has altered the perception of what love is supposed to be. So not only are they trying to seek love but the love is made-up and fake. I never thougt that one day I would be able to pick up a remote control that could help control the search for one's soulmate. When I click on the televsion the first thing I see is a message floating across the screen. "Who is more compatible for Flavor Flav ? Send a text message to 1221 for Bubbles or 1211 for New York." Is love really brought apon us by allowing strangers help us choose who's the right one? Love is supposed to be an attraction between two people who decide their own fate.

Reality of Love (Original)
As I sat across from a couple that was kissing, laughing, and enjoying each others presence. I felt the passion in the air surrounding me. I felt a sense of love that didn’t have to be dug up from a deep trench to be found as a treasure. I suddenly caught myself wondering how they may have first met in this love-altering society. Did they meet one another through friends or did they just catch one another’s eye while walking through the mall? It used to be that we didn’t have to search for love; it came naturally among us. The strength of love merges our hearts together, creating one without us even knowing. Through the years the Pop Culture trend of reality television has evolved love into a game. It’s a game that consists of fighting for one’s heart, trying to find your perfect match. This is slowly fading away the colorful thought tradition painted of letting love find us in reality and not allowing reality to fight the chances of true love.
I never thought that one day I would be able to pick up a remote control that could actually help control one’s attempt to find love. When I click on the television the first thing I see is a message floating across the screen while "Flavor of Love" is on a commercial break. "Who is more compatible for Flavor Flav, send a text message to 1221 for Bubbles or 1211 for New York?" Keep in mind that these names made for the game contestants were based upon their interview selection for the show (many of the women were half-naked, by the way). The "Flavor of love" was the first of many television sequels that contained so many women or men competing for the love of one who is pretty wealthy and famous in their eyes."Human matchmaking is involved only in selecting the game contestants-usually for amusement value as opposed to any concern for happiness or compatibility," says a MSN entertainment reporter Katie Johnson. This proves the point that to search for love through reality television eliminates the "real" meaning behind obtaining true love. Love is supposed to be defined as being an attraction that is way deeper than any shallow perception of outside appearance including but not limited to how fat one’s pockets are. It‘s supposed to connect and bond a relationship between two people who have common interests or goals in life."Contestants usually have little or no previous knowledge of each other, ‘Basic criteria’." Johnson states. Basic criteria meaning lots of dollar signs with nice bodies! How can you achieve the goal of capturing the one you love by flaunting your body or improvising words that only sugar-coat the moment but not the long-lasting future bond? My face becomes puzzled when I see Flavor Flav kissing many of the women on Day 1 in the season premiere. This puzzles me because I am trying to make sense of the tradition theory that perceives kissing as an intimate experience that a couple engages while in love. Following this show came "I love New York", "Real Chance of Love"," Rock of Love"," Strange Love", and on and on and on! All of them having the same existing concept that love will be conquered from nudity, violence, and deception. Are we really even searching for the right type of love (since the times have come to searching for it) or just sharing the though of lusting one another?
Through tradition love used to be solely seen as a natural function, something that just happened like winning an award in Kindergarten for student of the year, it unknowingly comes about. Without intention love will sneak up behind you and take your breath away. The thought of love used to bring upon the feeling of a strong positive emotion that made one’s heart jump up and down. Although the tradition of letting love find us is fading by many of the reality television shows broadcasted these days, there are a few that can challenge this Pop Culture Trend of not fighting for the one you "might" end up loving but keeping and cherishing the one you love. Shows such as "Wife Swap", "Trading Spouses", and the old game show the "Newlyweds" actually promote positive insights about love and how to keep it going in the right direction. It also allows the couples that decided to display their marriage nationally to have a chance to work on specific points in their marriage that may have been damaged through their journey of sustaining love. While switching spouses in the show demonstrates one’s need to value the love that has come to fulfill their life .It teaches us to be more comfortable in our own shoes because if we were in one’s another shoes it may not be so fun! Like my Dad always said to me "Be thankful for what you’ve got, not what you have not!" As Lucy Grealy said in her essay Masks certain things can teach us," how to accept the love of another with dignity."(45) These specific reality shows acknowledge that the whole tradition of love reaching us opposing having the need to search for it. Inside of the value of love each couple shares the values that accompany it (family, cultural, and individual). Many of the episodes that I have viewed exemplified the value of spending time with your children while others valued their career over the family. Not
searching for love is not such an insane idea.
The Pop Culture trend of searching for love, fighting for love through reality television has yet destroy our tradition about love but it sure has given us a glimpse of what it may become. In Steven Pinker’s essay Against Nature he states, "Human behavior has nothing to do with biology, it follows arbitrary cultural norms instead," illuminating the fact that although there is a tradition that love will seek us out naturally, people are more likely to follow what is known and popular in the present time. Being as it may reality television is one new way of gaining love.

REVISION
The last paper assignment of the quarter is the writing that needed the most revision. The tasks was to elaborate on a specific pop culture trend and to show how it has impacted the society as a whole. It seems my main point was supposed to be that we didn't always had to search for love but reality t.v. changed that tradition. But while re seeing my paper I discovered I fell off at times by discussing love is defined to be. I had too many ideas for just one paper. I struggled with on staying on the same track as my thesis statement. I also think I should have given more concrete examples to support my main idea.I felt like the reader may have gotten lost at certain points throughout my paper. Sad to say but one more weakness shown was run on sentences with too much detail like, "I felt a sense of love that didn't have to be dug up from a deep trench to be found as a treasure." or "Through tradition love used to be solely seen as a natural function, something that just happened like winning an award in kindergarten for student of the year." These sentences appear to be a bit lengthy and not really staying along the lines of my thesis. In my revised piece I decided chop sentences up and take out unnecessary detail and/or similes by sticking to my point." I felt a sense of love that was real." was one change I made immediately because it is in my intro and needs to be clean cut .I selected the first two pieces from this paper, they needed the most revision.
Identity Struggle
Wilson and Anzaldua's thesis statements are similar but different. Wilson argues that the way a female presents herself can hold a huge impact on the way others may identity you. Anazaldua demonstrates that the language that you speak and the accent that you carry along with it plays a big role in the way people can narrow down your identity. Both author's dicuss their struggle of having their own true identity shown."My point is, peolple get so twisted over female presentation that my bald head is cause for pause." (22)I think that she believes no matter how short or how long her hair is, she is still a woman clearly. One's identity should not be judged with such shallow perception." All Chicano students were required to take two speech classes: to get rid of our accents." (54) Her true identity was out shinig the identity of the american culture; which should have not been seen. Therefore causing her culture as a whole to be shut out of their own identity identifier, their beautiful accents.
The authors' personal experiences supported their arguments fully. The "Ice Cream Man" really made me see that gender is definately an identity marker. He was so quick to assume that Wilson's short hair was only a male characteristic, he passed over her " 40 C's "! And Wilson was so eager to say " What about these 40 C's?"(22) proving to me that not only do the people around her use gender as a identity marker but herself included." I am a black woman whose bald head makes me invisibleto some, boyish to others, and beautiful to me." (23) I believe that your identity should not be composed of the level of masculanity or feminity characterics you may have. It is a really narrow-minded concept. The situation when Anazaldua was caught speaking spanish and being punished for it, allowed me to see clearly that her identity was seen from her ethnicity." If you want to be American, speak 'American'. "(54) To me that is bascially saying hide and eliminate Anazaldua's identity of being a Chincano by down-grading her to speak her second language, english, all the time." Repeated attacks on our native tongue diminsh our sense of self."(57)

Critical Thinking !
For my critical thinking piece I chose our first group activity in the Identity Unit. This assignment allowed us to practice and share our analyzing skills with our peers. This assignment made us dig deep into the reading of each assigned essay, pulling out thesis statements and supporting ideas. It made me stay focused on the task which was to compare the essay's and to ask myself would the two author's agree with each other's arguments. That is why I selected this specific assignment. I was able to pull out the controlling idea that limited my focus only on the one point that both author's agree on. They were both struggling to to have their true identities shown. For example I took out a quote that described Kathy Wilson's fight for her identity to be seen without shallow preception, "My point is, people get so twisted over female presentation that my bald head is cause for pause." (22) By choosing quotes such as this one I showed the critical thinking skill obtained by pulling ideas together to create a concrete analysis.
HMM...What's in My Wallet Purse?
I never thought that the contents of my wallet purse could build such a bright image of my identity in some one's mind other than my own. I guess that is why when I lost my wallet purse for the first time, my stomach churned with butterflies as if I were getting ready to give a long speech in front of thousands. I am a very shy person so as I was sitting at home, twiddling my thumbs thinking,"What does that person think about me? Do they really care?" As time goes by my saliva becomes thicker in my throat as i remember that I had my last 20 dollars in that wallet purse. "Uh Oh!", said the cashier frowning down at my wallet purse."That young lady forgot her belongings". As she pages me across the intercom again and again, there was no reply. She reaches in and grabs my cell phone, hoping to find a home phone number to contact me."Oh, look how cute her two little children are..she must have strong family values or never at home to see her children as much as she would like." She scrolls further and further down to find nothing but business and school numbers."Maybe she is lonely and too career driven? I barely see any family or friend numbers." It's no use so she puts the phone down.
"Wow this young lady like to shop!" She pulls out multiple receipts, checking to see if there is any kind of information that might help her locate me.Coming across one credit card and one ATM card she assumes I am in debt with creditors but that I have plenty of money in the bank.No luck she keeps digging."she opens up the check book to find multiple checks written out for post-dated amounts for unpaid bills," Hmm she seems very financially stable, unlike I thought.!" Only two things left to grab to reach the created identity of myself. She looks at the large size toothbrush and toothpaste, passing it up but the pauses to say to herself," She must have braces! Nobody brushes their teeth that much!" She giggles to herself, reminicing when she had to brush after anything she ate!
At the bottom of my purse she found my work badge, with my full name and Fred Meyer Pharmacy boldy across the front. She quickly grabbed a phone book to call right away." Fred Meyer Pharmacy, Leticia speaking. How may I help you?" she paused, asking me to repeat my name. " I have your wallet purse!" she stated unexpectedly. My heart skipped a beat.In the back of my head still thinking, "Did she take my last 20 dollars?"I think the only thing that she missed was my profile. I had no Driver's license or ID to be found. There was no way of her knowong my age, physical features, or address. Do you want to know why? I always forget it at home !

Voice and Audience
I chose this blog assignment because it was one of the pieces that I was able release my personal voice in. It gave me the opportunity to reach out to the audience by adding my own creativity and flare. At the same time it broadened my thoughts about making quick assumptions on one's identity that may not be valid. The assignment made me relflect on myself to show me what I could be thinking of someone else. I described what I usually carry in my purse/wallet and what kind of image of my identity a stranger could draw up. I considered the audience as being strangers so I could create a vivd picture of how they may precieve me. Giving them multiple characteristics to choose from!
And the Winner is.....Basketball is a Community
Basketball is a community. As the sweats trickles down my face, I reach to grab a dry towel from the pile of towels that have yet come to absorb the sweat from my fellow teammates sweat seeping pores. Gasping for air a sweat drop finds its way on my tongue. Tasting the flavor of determination, I stand by eight other females who have that same taste lurking in their buds. We are all hoping to get that last huge bite of “25-0”. Passing the ball left to right and right to left through defenders, gripping the ball as if it was a baby, protecting it so no one can take away our sense of worth. Bashing through the wall of defenders, an overcoming adrenaline rush travels from head to toe, releasing all the stress in life I once had. Anytime I was a little tense the time to release my uneven energies was against our rivalry. All of the girls became physical when it came to finals time!
Basketball is a community. As coach calls a time out we all run to the sideline like a pack of animals getting ready to feed. As we gather all of our eyes focus on the draw board, focusing on all the ideas coach throws as at so we don’t loose our sense of stability. A whistle blows, our hands meet in the center of the circle gathering as one. Each one of our hands sends a vibration of wanting and needing through our bodies one by one to win this game. Uniformity floats in the air. Dirty looks, flying elbows, and hustle from the opposing team threaten to discover our differences. Causing tension to linger in our muscles .The score reads 45-45. Words exchange from player to player with the same anxiety that will soon determine our true togetherness. As the ball rolls my finger tips high into the air, my eyes close, and my vision of my basketball community flashes in front of me. A vision of a community that accepts me, challenges me, shares values with me and finally depends on me to do my part. “SWISH” the ball falls into the hoop to complete the last shot possible for the win. Smiles, joy, and fulfillment overcome the gym as we jump up and down with not a worry in the world. This proves, we are a community.-

Writer's Choice Award Goes To...............
My writer's choice is the Community Unit blog assignment. It shows that I have gained a true understanding of how a community is defined. Before we started this unit, I thought of a community as a place where a group of random people just lived for no apparent reason. Throughout this class, the readings really helped me to understand that communities are everywhere. They can be narrowed down to common interest that can tie us together such as downloading music, remodeling cars, or even eating out. They can pretty much be described by a single verb! In this blog I explained my connection and experiences with my basketball team to show how much a community really endures a common interest. It was very special to me because basketball is my passion. It was very comforting being able to express thoughts that I know others can relate to.
